Moment 4: MAREN

On May 17th, the Breakers paid tribute to a legend from their WUSA past. This legend pre-dates WPS.This legend pre-dates professional women's soccer at Harvard Stadium. This legend certainly pre-dates Riptide. Yet, it is in large part due to this legend that Riptide came into existence. This legend is the one and only Maren Meinert.

To hear those members of Riptide that saw Maren play from 2001-03 speak of her grit and determination, as well as her skill makes it clear why their hearts of fandom still beat strongly for the Breakers. This was very telling during the on-field presentation. Our president donned her WUSA Breakers jersey complete with "Meinert 6" across the back. She then proceeded to present Maren, the first member of the Pillars of Excellence, with flowers and a Riptide scarf. It is worth noting that Pia Sundhage upstaged all presentations with yet another song. Since she was at Harvard for the match, she got a Riptide scarf as well. Once a Breaker, always a Breaker (except for the Philly exodus maybe).

It is the hope that Maren one day returns to the Breakers organization is some capacity. Her experience with the German U-20s would enable her to be a very good talent scout for the club at the very least. In any event, seeing her and Pia walk past (and through) the Dock during the course of the match was an awesome experience for those present and made it a night that will not be forgotten.
